A man tries to save his step-father’s life for the sole purpose of being able to beat him in a fight and prove his worth. This has become one of my all-time favorite premises for a comedy.
Hot Rod delights in itself and invites you to do so as well, and in doing so it takes on a tone of pure joyfulness. I can’t name too many other movies that simply comfort me and make me happy. This movie reminds me of the feeling I would get re-watching Star Wars or Back to the Future for the 50th time on a hazy Sunday afternoon in my parents basement when I was 10. It kind of relaxes me. As an aspiring comic, the “we’re just gonna do whatever we want” attitude of it is kind of inspiring in its own way too.
Hot Rod scored ★★★★ (out of 5)
