‘Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie In The Works

When Disney first stated that they were going to be expanding the Star Wars universe with a sequel trilogy every other year and a stand alone film in-between, the world collectively dropped its jaw. We were still stinging from those prequel films and very wary of what the future of Star Wars could be. Would the sequel trilogy be more Phatom Menance or more A New Hope and what are these stand alone films. Rumors swirled that the original cast would be back for Episode VII (which were obviously true), raising hope for what was to come. Rumors of a Obi-Wan, Bobba Fett, and Yoda movie swirled—then we started learning facts: remember the opening scroll of A New Hope? Let’s make that a movie and call it Rogue One. Han Solo? Let’s give him his own flick.

Fans, mostly, were relieved when Force Awakens was good. It honored the OG movie while giving us a new story with new characters. Despite the re-shoots, Rogue One ended up proving you can tell a story, set in the Star Wars universe, without the Skywalkers. As we prepare for Episode VIII The Last Jedi, we are now getting news that Disney is in early talks with three-time Oscar nominated director, Stephen Daldry (The ReaderThe HoursBilly Elliot), to bring a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie to life.

This is great news for Star Wars fans and plenty to chew on while we await The Last Jedi, releasing December 15th, 2017 and the yet to be titled Han Solo film wrapping up production and due for release March 25th, 2018.

Alec Guinness brought the character to life in the original Star Wars film, A New Hope. The mentor to Luke was also the mentor to Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker—portrayed by Ewan McGregor in the prequel trilogy. McGregor has previously stated that he would be interested in reprising the role if the opportunity presented itself.

Are you excited about this potential Obi-Wan movie? Would you like to see Ewan McGregor reprise his role or see someone else take up the mantle? Sound off in the comments below!
